Stone Tools

During the short time on Kythira, we learned the basics of tool-making from the archaeologist and famed Greek stone tool expert, Dr. Christos Matzanas, who was there to knapp copies of the tools the ancients would have used to construct their raft to settle Crete. For the raft to cross the Timor Sea we are fortunate to have Bartholomeus van der Geer join the team from Italy.

For The First Mariners current project, stone tools will be trialled and recorded at every stage of preparations and during the voyage to Australia. Such a determined attempt at authenticity extends of course to all aspects of proposed middle Late Pleistocene material culture including food preservation, fire lighting,  water storage, cooking techniques and habitation shelter.
