Kythira to Crete
The First Mariners team spent five months of the autumn of 2013 and the summer of 2014 on the Greek island of Kythira preparing to establish how Europe’s first mariners made it to the island of Crete. The island of Kythira is at the bottom of the Peloponnese in western Greece and some 45 nautical miles north of Crete which, although the rest of the Greek islands were connected to the mainland and each other during periods of glaciation, has always been surrounded by sea.
With 10 paddlers aboard, the raft set out from Kythira early on the calm sea morning of July 15, 2014. Some 46 hours later, with relatively few incidents, the raft entered the picturesque north shore Cretan harbor of Chania.
